Service Learning

Service Learning

 Literal
Specific Hours was kept by Antoinette Lou. Dates Serviced January 10th, 2011-March 23rd, 2011 with an additional working day on April, 28th 2011.
Duties Held: I was an assistant towards the entire company. For example, I helped edit City Council members contact information, create company folders, create business contact information, create flyers for future events, assist members for preparation of economic seminar, and other various objectives.
Contact Information: Antoinette Lou. (626) 856-3400

Interpretive: The most important thing I gained from this experience is that this was my simulation of being held in an actual working field as an employee.  Working at this organization made me feel part of their company since day one and it was mainly due to everyone's positive attitude in the working environment.  This experience that I had when I worked is what every worker should expect when they come in day in and day out.  Max de Pree discusses this idea that workers need to have momentum and productivity so that everyone gains a positive working experience and something meaningful through their role.  As a student intern, I was an 'employee' under the organization that received the experience of a satisfied worker each day as I entered the company's doors.

Applied: On my last day of service learning, I had an interview with vice president, Mike Shay, and told me that this company gives him a positive experience. Everyone in the company communicates with a positive attitude. There are some members that can be stressed out at times, but do not show it.  Cynthia Kurtz-CEO of the company-is the one responsible for keeping the positive energy in this organization because she guides everyone in what needs to be done.  Because she treats everyone right with respect and dignity of every individual, we are able to fulfill our tasks without any fears of being in the working environment. Throughout all my various duties that I have performed, not once did I feel fearful of the other members or an outsider of the working community.  Being part of this working experience made me feel part of this organizational simply by the way they communicated with me and everyone else.

Ten Hour Service Learning Check

Within this past week, I was able to work with and meet all the members of the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership. There are a total of six members and each of them play an effective role in maintaining this organization.  For example, The vice president/ investor relations job is to convince other businesses to relocate or expand their business into the San Gabriel Valley.  In return promising that they are preserving and enhancing the quality of life and he economic vitality of the San Gabriel Valley, thus following their mission statement.  Some of the tasks that I have accomplished is creating a flier for business meetings, creating introductory folders (about the Partnership), and in putting contact information of other businesses.  Throughout my work, the team ask me questions about my project and give me insight about their organization and how it relates to my project. I've learned that everyone plays a leadership/ independent role in this organization. One cannot function together and by being part of this organization, I have observed that trust is important and being able to rely on other members is an essential for a smooth flowing environment/ community.
I've worked a total of twelve hours with this organization.
