Reflection for 2 Hour Presentation
Overall, the presentation of my organizational leadership seminar went really well. Many worries ran through my mind thinking something would go wrong whether I would take too much time on a certain activity or present the content and have little time for the activity. I was told by Dave to make my lesson plan very specific because presenters need to know what exactly they will be doing. As I had created the final lesson plan, I now had a structure of how the organization of the presentation would be coordinated and this really helped me during my presentation. The content I had spoken was met on time of thirty minutes and was intentionally planned to finish before break. I realized that the 'meat' of the presentation had to be taken care of before break had started.
Since I was doing only two activities, I wanted the last activity to be done after break so that the activity and the discussion of my best answer, product, and three significant sources were all I had to mention. The structure of the lesson plan really helped me get my message across the students, which was to understand and learn the importance of building community within an organization.
One last note, I felt the atmosphere of the classroom was very professional. As I was placing the chairs outside the classroom before the presentation, I felt like I was at school in the quad. However, when I walked back inside the classroom it was a different feel as opposed to being outside. The classroom had a very professional feel to it and it is something that I feel very proud of.

2 Hour Presentation Rough Draft
EQ: What is the best way to build community within an organization?
Classroom Theme: Leadership seminar
Want to create a stage-like atmosphere with a spotlight shining on me or equal lighting
Materials: Curtains (Black perhaps) stage lights. Posters of influential quotes
Sponge Activity: Ice Breaker Activity
1. What is the activity: Will give them a series of questions of how much they know about leadership
2. How it will be done (materials included): No materials. People will need to raise their hands and they will answer based on their first instinct. I will then say what type of leader they are.
3. How the activity relates to answer: Gives them an understanding of what leadership should be about. Collaboration and acceptance of one another.
Introduction: I will first begin with the foundation of why this topic is important followed by explaining answer #1 and activity #1 and so forth up until #3. Then
I will explain my best answer and my product gained from it. Finally, I will explain my 3 valuable sources and wrap it up.
Foundation: Explain importance of what it means to be a community. Use Peer Mediation as an example. Explain how leadership affiliates with building community and team work. Define EQ.
Answer 1: Upholding a mission statement
- ‘Why are we here?’ Lecture From school to daily classes to why they are sitting there at the moment) (1:30-2 minutes)
- Explain what is a mission statement (1 Minute)
- Importance of upholding a mission statement. (strategies and goals) (2 Minutes)
- Activities Club Mission Statement (2 Minutes)
- How and Why lecture (5 Minutes)
Answer 1 Activity: The Mission Role Play
What is the activity:
- Students will be given organizational scenarios based upon problems of the organization.
One Scenario will be that people will need to create a mission statement based on what the organization has been performing (and how they perform it) and their final product. Their final product provides why the organization exists.
Another scenario will be that students will be given a mission statement and a set up problem with one worker. Student will have to create a solution for that worker so that they have a fine balance between their personal lives and upholding the mission statement
These two types of scenarios I will be working with the audience, but each of them are different and tell different stories
2. How it will be done: Groups of 4 or 5 will be working together to solve each issue. People would be rotating the papers around.
3. How the activity relates to answer: To get people to understand the importance of the mission statement. Workers should not ignore mission statements.
4. All materials for activity: Paper with typed content
Answer 2: Positive ongoing communication
Information taught:
- Explain that everything that we communicate has an emotional appeal (1-2 min)
- Discuss why it is important. Cynthia Kurtz story (service learning) (2-3 min)
- Lecture Verbal, nonverbal, paraverbal
- Optimism Lecture: Negative emotions will limit ways of communicating. Leaders must be able to communicate under fear. Optimism key role in leading, provides followers a vision and trust within us. Manipulating communication like inclusion and optimism. (5-10 min)
Answer 2 Activity: The Positive Harkness
1. What is the activity: Students will be in a harkness circle and use positive consistent communication skills based upon the following statement: How can we as c/o 2011&2012 communicate positively and consistently so that the c/o 2012 have a successful senior year.
2. How it will be done: Everyone needs to include each individual in the harkness organization. Inclusion builds community. Students CANNOT use any negative feedback and find possibilities so that the ideas of seniors and juniors can make their idea come true. Positive ongoing communication needs to be played throughout. I will be assessing them by how many positive and negative communication they are using
2. How the activity relates to answer: Gives everyone a realization of how much shot down ideas people use in an organization. Also tests students if they are upholding the problem statement
3. All materials for activity: None
Answer 3:
Assessing the team
Information taught:
- Introduction: Tie in last activity to this essential answer and give statistics of how many people used negative feedback to positive feedback
- Explain importance of working on people’s strengths.
- Tie in the purpose of introduction to assessing the team. (People need to feel comfortable and want to work in their environment)
- Tools for assessing-note taking and implementation, tests, & 360 circle
- Being able to read statistics of strengths and weaknesses
Answer 3 Activity: Learning to assess
1. What is the activity: Students will watch a video interaction and take notes of what went wrong in the video organization
2. How it will be done: I will find a video that lacks organization and other missed important factors. They will take notes on what went wrong and we will all have a share out afterward.
2. How the activity relates to answer: Gives students a realization that assessing is essential to building community in an organization through their fix mistakes
3. All materials for activity:
Paper and pen, video source
Best Answer: Upholding a Mission Statement because everything that is done throughout the organization needs to be done collaboratively. Positive communication and assessing the team relates back to the mission statement gives a true meaning of upholding the mission statement.
Three Meaningful Sources
- Cynthia Kurtz and Mike Shay of San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership

3. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People- Stephen R. Covey
Product: Companion Club: First major flaw, learned from my mistakes and moved on to the Activities Club, in which I utilized a mission statement to build a purpose and serve the I-Poly community. Performed activities to follow mission statement and gained insight from other two answers through observation in service learning as well as experiencing it through my club.
Conclusion: Thank everyone for attending and hope that everything they learned will be applied next year.

Leadership
What is the best way to build community within an organization?
Performing art: Music/ Original Song
I feel that this original piece can discuss the importance of having community and teamwork. Also I can also add the importance of having a leader or facilitator when building community.
Objective: Students will gain an understanding of building community through my 3 eq answers and my derivative example, the Companion Club
EQ: What is the best way to build community within an organization?
Answers: Building a mission statement
Creating a comfortable enviornment
Creating ice breakers within the organization
Intro: I will be making an entrance through the door. Prior to my entrance, I will play a recording on my phone that will give an introduction of myself just like a leadership seminar. This kind of entrance will allow me to create a comfortable and enthusiastic environment for my audience, hence relating to one of my eq answers.
Body: I will be talking about my three eq answers in relation to the Companion Club and my research in the past.
Creating a mission statement: I will be explaining how the Companion Club did not necessarily have one, if it did I will be explain that our club did not live up to the mission statement. I will then be explaining about my interview with the principal of Baldwin Park High School, and how we discussed about the mission statement. I will also be discussing my conversation that I had recently with my service learning mentor about mission statements.
Creating a comfortable environment: I will be asking people how they felt when I made my 'grand' entrance for my presentation. I will also be giving them personal examples of how I felt about negative atmosphere, more particularly Mr. Pangs class...yes Mr. Pangs class. I will then be asking them how they feel when they enter our house every day and compare the two. I will then be tying this whole scenario with how importance it is when building a community. Also, I will be giving a brief explanation of research of my optimism page.
Ice Breakers: I will be giving examples of how this has been effective through Peer Mediation. And I will be giving an explanation of my most previous interviewee and how she uses it to build community within her ASB class.
I will put the students into groups and they will have 5 minutes have to either create a mission statement, as a group, that will contribute to North House or giving an explanation of how they can contribute to North house by making it an even more comfortable environment. They will be assigned which topic to chose from by me. Then they will then be sharing out afterward for 3 minutes.
I will conclude my presentation that I will be practicing these elements with my new club. I will restate how each one is important, and thank audience for listening and sum it all up.
Objective: Students will learn about the three leadership styles: Autocratic, Democratic, and Bureaucratic.
Literal
(2 Minutes)
1 minute: I will engage the class by asking what they define as leadership. After 45 seconds I will then explain what its true meaning of the term.
1 minute: I will then quickly explain each of the three types of leadership styles. This will take approx. 20 seconds per term.
Interpretive
(3 minutes)
For the next three minutes, the students will play a matching game. I will read an excerpt about the type of leadership. I could include a name of a famous figure and afterwards, the students will have to interpret which leadership style is being exemplified. I may also read a certain type of leadership style without using a name; just using a reference of the term. I will read each excerpt for 20 seconds and the class will have 40 seconds to answer. (So that I can get through all the excerpts)
Applied
The excerpts I will read will contain context clues of the certain leadership style. They will need to interpret which style is being displayed AND explain their reasoning for that choice.
(Below are the following excerpts and the highlighted words/ phrases are the context clues.)
Martha Stewart (Autocratic)
Martha Stewart built her empire with personal attention to each and every detail. Whether you like her or not, she was meticulous and demanding. She was also very successful in her endeavors and in using her ______ management style. Bureaucratic Leadership
I have to ensure that safety in my work environment is functioning correctly. After all, this is a big business. However, I must see quality work from my workers and laziness is not allowed. They must dress appropriately and follow the rules
Democratic Leadership
We must work together to ensure everyone is happy. We have to make sure majority rules and everyone has their say in the implementation of this new rule. The process may take longer than it should be, but it will be worth it.
*I don’t know if it is okay, but I ripped the Martha Stewart excerpt from the internet. I don’t know if it will be considered plagiarism, I would like to know if it will be okay. I will only be reading that excerpt to the class.*
Five-Minute Presentation Reflection
1) What would you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?
One of my challenging efforts was to get my audience's attention and get them hooked to watch my presentation. I asked myself, "What will it take to get my audience attracted to this presentation? Since there aren't any vibrant visuals." So what I did was that I put my fists against my waist and popped out my chest. With my broad stance, I knew it got people's attention because Ayaa asked why I pulled such a stunt. My reply was, "It got your attention, didn't it?"
She laughed and nodded.
2) What was most challenging to do and why?
The most challenging task I had to accomplish was the explanation of the three forms of leadership within a minute. I had to explain each form of leadership with a quick explanation (approximately 20 seconds each) and descriptive enough so that the class would be able to grasp the knowledge I had given them. I did my best to keep their attention by playing a game afterward. Thankfully, I had finished with 30 seconds left.
