Independent Study 1

Independent Study 2 Approval
1) I plan on managing the Activities Club to drive it on a more know basis or making it thrive.  In doing so, I plan to create a Personal Development Plan or Leadership Plan in order to keep the club in progress.  Management was a key factor of what cause the Companion Club to fail, and I will do the best of my ability to keep the club sustainable.  However, I fear that the 30 hours of work into this club maybe difficult to fulfill and I will look in more in detail of what Leadership Plan, which is self-made (or can be), has to offer.  In this case, may add up to thirty hours if done correctly.

2).  This independent task relates to my essential question because the club is an organization and I am seeking ways to which method best builds a community.  Perhaps using this club and approaching with different methods of what best build community will help answer my essential question.

Literal
I, Eric Torres, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours.

Here is a poster I made that surprisingly took a while.  (From the lines inside the letters)

Literal
I, Eric Torres, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours.

In the course of the thirty hours of my independent component I have completed the following:

Companion Club: This club had the purpose of building relationships between freshman and seniors, in which seniors were mentoring freshman.  This club was the foundation for all of my analysis of this independent component. In addition there are meeting agendas, officer meeting ideas, and other paperwork that were intended for future planning.

Journal Entries- This was intended for me to write my thoughts down in a completely quiet environment so that new ideas can prosper and discover troubles/ solutions that I am encountering or may encounter.

Companion Club Report:  A write up explaining what went wrong in the Companion Club.  The purpose of this was to gain a deeper insight of why things went wrong in the club.  Finding my flaws will help develop my leadership skills for the next club.

Ice Breaker Activities: I pulled a list of activities from a book and rewrote the explanation, and lastly analyzed the activity to get an understanding of how it will benefit the club.

Posters: The posters are advertisements for the new club, Activities Club, which is to launch this Wednesday.

Interpretive:
I would honestly have to say that everything that I had assembled together was significant for the preparation of my new club.  I had a great idea with the purpose of the Companion Club, but as it slowly diminished, it was no more.  I wrote in my composition book all the actions that went wrong in managing the Companion Club.  As I wrote the Companion Club report, the flaws I had set for myself were analyzed at a deeper scale.  These mistakes helped me prepare for my new club, and it helped me coordinate and prepare what is to happen with the Activities Club.  One of my books that has helped me develop my leadership skills is called Leadership is an Art, and I must say that leadership is most definitely an art, especially dealing with something from scratch.  If something is created from an artist it takes time to develop their master piece whether it is writing music or painting a picture on canvas.  Leadership has its creativity as well, and it is important to not have any flaws because anything can happen in an organization.  The time I took to prepare for this new club will help me have a smooth flow of the club.  Some of the journal entries required heavy researching that would best benefit the club.  Although some journal entries may seem shorter, the quality of what was prepared for the club was equivalent to the amount of time put in.

Applied:
This independent component greatly assisted with my essential question because my new club is about building new relationships in which students would not have ever encountered on campus.  As I had written in my journal, I have had a deep understanding of a mission statement, enthusiastic atmosphere, and the importance of ice breakers.  These three elements that I have discovered are my three essential question answers.  I would not have discovered these answer if it was not for the preparation for this new club.  Now it is matter of practice and observation.
For example, ice breakers have the intention to unify a classroom together in a sociable manner.  I have witnessed this last semester in Peer Mediation and it really worked.  People are more comfortable with each and it ‘breaks the ice’ that leaves everyone in a upbeat type of feel. I had written many examples of ice breakers in which I feel that will benefit this new club.  This is one way to build community, but is it the best way?  It is one possible solution.

Q1: What would you like to do/create for your independent component?

A: I've created the Companion Club and I would like to use this idea as my independent task.

Q2: Explain how you think this will be a worthwhile use of 30 hours?

A: If I am able to be approved to use this as my independent task, I would be able to apply the leadership skills that I have been researching and practice these skills so that I can be a more effective leader as well as making a difference to the school.  During the club, it's only about less than an hour a week to practice my leadership art, but I also have to use extra time to prepare and get organized with my team for the weekly meetings that we have.

Q3: How will this help you to answer your EQ?

A:  This will help me learn which ideas of leadership is most effective (and not so effective) to  lead a certain amount of people.  I will learn how to hone some of my skills that I feel that are very powerful as well as trying new concepts of leaderships that may/ may not be so effective.

  1. Sounds good...just make sure that you log your related activities, and also how your research affects what you do and an evaluation of how it worked.
